When I saw this bright red covered book on the table in Eason’s St Stephens Green (Dublin Ireland) I felt a surge of excitement!!! Booker prize winner 2014!! I needed to have this.
Reading his previous novel “One Day” had moved me in a way that I never expected. I fell in love with the epic story that did not end in happily ever after.
I decided to keep “US” for the coming winter figuring it would be a delicious read on those cold nights tucked up in bed…
Not so much!!! I am currently on page 286 and I have battled and dragged myself through these pages wishing and hoping that something will make me fall in love with this story. I’m not sure if it is the way in which it has been written that is turning me off or the character Douglas being less than lovable.
The writing itself of course is filled with beautiful language but I find it descriptive to the point of boring in places. The story being that of a failing marriage feels bland. I understand the fact that a scientific man of “Douglas'” stature is not going to blurt out completely romantic blurbs but come on!! It’s supposed to be a story of self discovery and love.
Will I end up loving this book????? Will I find myself in a place where I suddenly get it??
Anyone else out there who has read this book please offer your opinions!! No spoilers as I do plan to finish it!!!! I feel frustrated by the fact that I don’t actually love this book.
